The impact of a clean work environment on productivity – what European studies show

Workplace cleanliness is not just an aesthetic issue. More and more studies show that a clean and well-maintained work environment has a direct impact on employees' concentration, well-being and productivity. This finding has been highlighted in several European studies in recent years.
Study: Tidiness increases concentration and work satisfaction
A study conducted in the Netherlands by the VSR – Association for Cleaning Research compared employees’ experiences in offices with different levels of cleanliness. The study involved 120 office workers, and the results were clear: the cleaner the space, the better their perceived ability to concentrate, work well-being and efficiency.
Indoor air quality and cleaning support productivity
The World Green Building Council’s European report “Health, Wellbeing and Productivity in Offices” showed that improving indoor air quality can increase employee productivity by up to 8–11%. According to the report, regular and high-quality cleaning, maintenance of ventilation and dust control are key factors in improving the quality of the working environment.
Hygiene and employee experience in the workplace
According to a survey conducted in Europe by Swedish hygiene giant Essity, almost half of employees perceive their own office as a “germ-filled den.” This result shows that cleanliness is not only a health factor, but also a psychological and cultural one: it affects how valued employees feel about their work environment and their employer.
Conclusions
Research shows that the cleanliness of office premises is a clear productivity factor. Cleaning affects air quality, concentration, sick leave and employees' experience of the quality of the workplace.
